CUH MG: Chaminade’s Morita Lands on All-Conference Second Team

Junior’s 10th place finish at Championships place him amongst Pac West elite

QUEEN CREEK, AZ – Chaminade junior Layne Morita (Kapaa, HI/Kauai HS) became the first Silversword Men's golfer to be named to the Pac West All-Conference the conference office announced today.  Morita, who shot a 3 over 219 in the three round Pac West Championships earned Second Team All-Pac West Accolades.   

 

Grand Canyon claimed three of the top four Pacific West Conference golf awards, while Hawai'i Pacific rookie Connor Rumpf (Portland, OR/Sherwood) was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year, capping a stellar season for the league on the links.

 

The honors were announced by the PacWest Media Relations Office in Queen Creek, AZ, on Sunday, June 14, and were part of the 2009 All-PacWest Men's Golf Team.

 

Grand Canyon junior Terence Daniels (Smith's, Bermuda/Desert Mountain, AZ) was picked as the PacWest Player of the Year, while freshman teammate Tyler Wooldridge (Carefree, AZ/Cactus Shadows) was chosen as the Newcomer of the Year.

 

Antelope head coach Marc Chandonnet was named the Coach of the Year in the league after leading Grand Canyon to the PacWest Championship and a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championship.

 

Daniels averaged 73.89 over 37 rounds during the season. His season-low was a round of 67 while he tied for fifth at the PacWest Championship with a three-day score of 217.

 

During the NCAA II Super Regional, Daniels finished seventh to qualify for nationals regardless of his team's finish.

 

Wooldridge averaged 75.63 strokes per 18 holes over 32 rounds this year. He posted a season-best 69, recorded five scores under par, and tied for 12th at the PacWest Championship.

 

Both Daniels and Wooldridge earned All-PacWest honors for finishing in the Top 14 in the conference tournament. The top seven players earned First Team honors, while players finishing eight through 14 were named Second Team.

 

Daniels repeated as a First Team selection, while Wooldridge earned Second Team honors.

 

Grand Canyon finished with five All-PacWest selections. Junior Brandon Hill (Avondale, AZ/Millennium) and senior Mike Krahe (Flagstaff, AZ/Sinagua) were named First Team after they tied for fifth at the PacWest Championship with a score of 217.

 

Junior Bentley Nakasawa (Yuma, AZ/Yuma Catholic) earned his second straight All-PacWest selection. He was a Second Team choice after tying for 12th at the conference tournament with a score of 222. In 2008 he was named All-PacWest First Team.

 

Hawai'i Pacific was led by Rumpf's Freshman of the Year award and sophomore Adam Istvan's (Detroit, MI/Seabury Hall Academy, HI) All-PacWest Second Team honor.

 

Rumpf produced an average round of 76.9 during the 2009 campaign. He ranked 60th in the West Region and tied for 21st in the PacWest Championship.

 

Istvan earned Second Team accolades for placing ninth at the conference championship. He posted a three-round score of 218 and missed being a First Team selection by a stroke.

 

Hawai'i Hilo claimed four All-PacWest honors, including two First Team choices and a pair of Second Team selections.

 

Senior Zady Ari (Fullerton, CA) repeated as a First Team pick when he scored a 216 at the league championships, while junior Logan Goulding (Tracy, CA/Merril West) also repeated as a First Team choice after tying for the PacWest individual title and finishing tied for second following a playoff.

 

Goulding is now a three-time All-PacWest selection after picking up the honor as a freshman in 2007.

 

Junior Isaac Jaffurs (Haleiwa, HI/Kahuku) represented the Vulcans on the Second Team after earning First Team accolades in 2008. He finished tied for 12th at the league championship after posting a three-round score of 222.

 

Senior Stephen Zane (Pukalani, HI/Baldwin) claimed his inaugural PacWest award by taking Second Team honors after placing 10th with a 219.

 

Dixie State junior Cameron Crawford (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) and sophomore David Jennings (Farmington, UT/Viewmont) each repeated as All-PacWest selections after earning Second Team honors last year.

 

Crawford jumped to the First Team after posting a 215 conference tournament score. He tied for first but finished second following a playoff for the individual title. Jennings earned his second straight Second Team honor after tying for 15th with a 223.

 

Notre Dame de Namur sophomore Ryan Sheffer (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) tied for fifth at the PacWest Championship with a 217, earning First Team honors.  

 

BYU-Hawaii rookie Doug Bischoff (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Tesoro) tied for 15th with a 223 to earn Second Team honors.

 

The Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Championship was held in Antioch, CA, April 20-21 at the Roddy Ranch Golf Club.
