HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team opened their 2015 fall non-championship season, falling to Division I Hawai'i 13-0 in an exhibition Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Silverswords were limited to two hits against Rainbow Wahine pitching, bouncers through the left side by
Coco Stewart in the third inning and
Nicole Erichsen in the seventh. Their only other base runners were
Jenn Betian, who was hit by a pitch in the first inning, and freshmen
Kiana Ulufale and
Kayla Henmi, who walked in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Starter
Luana Moreno lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman
Kayla Higuchi was the first reliever out of the bullpen, going one inning while
Chelsea Camello went the final 2 2/3, allowing just one run while striking out three. None of Chaminade's pitchers allowed a homer against the powerful Hawai'i bats.
The 'Swords also turned the game's only double-play when Camello got Sarah McAndrew to line out to freshman third baseman
Rainelle Matsuoka who fired to Erichsen at first to complete the twin-killing in the bottom of the sixth.
Brittany Hitchcock went five innings and picked up the win for Hawai'i. Rachel Lack, Tayana Mata and Sarah Muzik each had two hits and two RBI for UH.
The game was played without a run-rule and unlimited substitutions so both teams could get a good look at all their players in game situations.
The Silverswords conclude the tournament Saturday when they face Hawai'i-Hilo at 12 p.m., then host Hawai'i in a rematch at 4 p.m.
