HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team opened their exhibition season by falling to the University of Hawai'i, 2-0, Friday in the opener of the Kama'aina Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
It was perhaps one of the best performances by a Silversword team against their Division I counterparts.
Luana Moreno held the potent Rainbow Wahine bats in check, tossing a complete-game five-hitter in the loss.
UH plated single runs in the first and third innings but Moreno dug deep, allowing only two hits from the fourth inning. She struck out two while walking two batters but also managed to strand three runners in scoring position.
The 'Swords managed two hits off Hawai'i starter Brittany Hitchcock, one from
Jenn Betian who led off the game with a bloop single to left field and a
Nicole Erichsen single in the sixth.
Chaminade mounted several threats against the 'Bows including in the fifth with runners at second and third with two outs. They also had runners at third in the first and sixth innings. In the seventh, pinch-hitter
Racquel Misioka earned a walk against UH closer Heather Morales to get the tying run to the plate but Chaminade hit into a game-ending fly-out double play.
After a season in which they struck out an average of 5.3 per game, the 'Swords stuck out only twice and managed to put the ball in play against the Rainbow Wahine, forcing them to commit three infield errors. Chaminade had one.
Hitchcock got the win for Hawai'i tossing six frames while Morales earned the save.
The Silverswords and Rainbow Wahine face each other again Saturday at 1 p.m. in the final day of the Kama'aina Tournament. Live stats will be available
