Honolulu, HI - The Chaminade University women's volleyball team dropped to Barry University 3-0 in their home opener today. The Swords, 3-3 on the season hit just .159 on the match compared to the Buccaneers blistering .400 hitting percentage.
The Swords played Barry tough in the first game and tied the score at 23 on a kill by junior outside hitter Kahala Kabalis. On the ensuing play CU freshman Patti Hardimon set up Nohealani Burgess with a beautiful pass for the kill and a 24-23 lead. The Buccaneers, however, went on a five-point run and closed out game one 30-26.
There was no lack of excitement in game two. The 100+ spectators watched the lead seesaw back and forth until the Buccaneers put together a strong 9-4 run to take the second game 30-23.
The Swords jumped out to the early 3-0 advantage in game three, but Barry battled back to take a commanding 23-14 lead. After a CU timeout, the Swords put together a three point run but the Buccaneers proved to be too tough and came out with the 30-22 victory for the 3-0 win.
Kahala Kabalis led Chaminade with 13 kills and 5 service aces. Valasi Sepulona added 12 kills and Michelle Norman handed out 33 assists on the afternoon.
Chaminade continues their home stay tomorrow when they take on UC-San Diego at 12:00 noon and St. Mary's at 7:30 PM.
