Hilo, HI - The Silversword softball team lost two games to UH-Hilo today, 5-0 & 5-3. The Vulcans improved to 6-0 in the PacWest and 10-3 overall, while Chaminade fell to 4-2 in the conference and 4-8 overall.
Hilo's Sarah Steele pitched a complete game shutout in game one, winning 5-0 after allowing three hits over seven innings. Donnell Wittekind gave up ten hits and five earned runs in the loss for the Silverswords.
The Swords jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two. The 3, 4, and 5 hitters all scored on RBI from the batters in the 4, 5 and 6 spots. Heidi Garcia, Kehaulani Yamaguchi and Harmonie Martinez each drove in a run in the first. The Vulcans' Tara Martinez shut down the Chaminade bats after the first, and UH-Hilo rallied for three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the win. Jennifer McCorkhill and Nancy Vega each drove in a pair of RBI for the Vulcans. Martinez picked up the win while the Swords' Loihi McKeague took the loss after giving up nine hits and five earned runs in six innings.
