Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii- In the opening game of the 2005 EA Sports Maui Invitational, Chaminade fell to the #4 ranked Spartans of Michigan State by a final score of 89-67. The game was played in front of a sold out crowd at Lahaina Civic Center and a national audience on ESPN2.
In a game that was nip and tuck for 20 minutes, Chaminade hung tough, getting as close as 12 points with ten minutes left after leading late in the first half against the #4 ranked Spartans of Michigan State.
The Swords managed to stay in the game while only shooting 19% from the arc, while Michigan State shot 78% from three. Chaminade had three players in double figures, led by Chris Reaves with 18 points along with 6 assists and 6 rebounds, while Marko Kolaric added 15 points and 7 rebounds. Senior Chris Powell also added 11 points along with 5 rebounds in defeat.
Zach Whiting added 8 assists and 6 rebounds for CUH. The Swords shot 21 of 27 from the free throw line on the evening, good for 78%.
Michigan State was led by Maurice Ager with 23 points in the win. Chaminade (0-1) will face the Terrapins of Maryland at 8:30 Hawaiian Time, 1:30 East Coast Time. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
