Lahaina, HI- In a game that was back and forth for 35 minutes, Oklahoma pulled away with clutch shooting by Austin Johnson to defeat Chaminade 72-57 in the 2006 EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Chaminade proved to be a worthy opponent for Oklahoma in this match-up as Chaminade was tight throughout and down four, 56-52, with the game in crunch time. Two back to back three's by Austin Johnson proved to be the difference, pushing the lead to ten, with free throws making up for the final tally.
Stewart Kussler was a problem again for the opposition, scoring 23 points on 8-13 shooting to go along with 7 rebounds. Hayden Heiber added 14 points on 4-7 shooting, and 4-5 from the arc. Marko Kolaric added 8 rebounds, while Zack Whiting added 9 assists and had 32 for the tournament.
Oklahoma was effective on the offensive glass with 16 on the evening, headed by Longar Longar who had 9 offensive rebounds, to go along with 24 points.
Oklahoma improves to 3-2 with the win, while Chaminade falls to 0-3 with the loss.
Chaminade is back in action this upcoming Tuesday at home at 7:30 PM against Carleton College in McCabe Gym. There will be a special halftime presentation retiring the #50 jersey of the late Will Pounds and commemorating the 2005-06 Pac West Champion Silverswords.
