Honolulu, HI- In a game that pitted conference rivals against each other, UH-Hilo evened the season series with Chaminade at 2-2 with an 82-69 win at McCabe Gym.
The first half was a difficult one for CUH, as the Vulcans sprinted out to a 41-29 lead at the break. The Swords were out rebounded 23-15 in the half and UH-Hilo shot 53% from the floor. The start of the second half was not any better for CUH as Hilo took a 9-1 run to start the second half to go up 50-30, early on in the second stanza.
Chaminade made a run and cut the lead to 10 with five minutes to play behind a more aggressive defense and scores. The Vulcans held on down the stretch though, with some timely passes and free throws. UH-Hilo shot 18-24 from the line in the second half.
The Swords were led by Zack Whiting with 23 points and Chris Powell with 8 rebounds. CUH shot 34% from the floor, 32% from the arc and 69% from the line. The Vulcans won the war on the boards 42-36. Travis Sobers led the Vulcans with 25 points, while Joe Travis turned in a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. With the loss, Chaminade University falls to 15-8, 7-3 in the PacWest, while UH-Hilo improves to 15-7, 5-4 in the PacWest.
Chaminade is back in action at home on Saturday night against the `Lopes of Grand Canyon. Tip off is set for 7:30pm
