Swords Win Auto Service Nanook Classic

Fairbanks, AK- The Lady Swords went to the great frontier to play three volleyball matches. Three victories later, they come back with some accolades.

After defeating Alderson-Broaddus on day one of the two day tournament, Chaminade had two tests on day two. First up was perennial powerhouse Nebraska-Kearney, currently ranked #8 in the nation. CUH won 30-18, 30-25, 28-30, 30-24. The Lady Swords stepped up to the plate offensively, with five players in double-digit kills. Trina Kauliakamoa led all Swords with 22 kills, to go along with 20 digs. Evelyn Bluthenthal had a double-double as well, adding 12 kills to 20 defensive digs.

Three other Swords added 10 kills a piece. Brittnee Fonnesbeck, Vanja Radanovic and Lila Sapolu. Sapolu hit a red-hot .467 for the match. Tamara Kauliakamoa had 57 assists running the offense. Defensively, Chelsea Powell added 21 digs, while Vanja Radanovic added 7 total blocks on the match.

CUH outhit Nebraska-Kearney .219 to .181 and outdug the Lopers 90-73. Kelli Bunger led Nebraska-Kearney with 19 kills and Mikala Gleason added 50 assists. The win moved the Lady Swords to 5-2 on they year while giving UNK their first loss of the year.

Next up for Chaminade was the Nanooks of Alaska-Fairbanks. Four games was the number again, as CUH won 30-27, 30-18, 29-31 and 30-17.

Brittnee Fonnesbeck led CUH with 15 kills, while all-tournament selection, Trina Kaliakamoa, added 14 in the win. Four Swords were in double digit digs, with Chelsea Powell leading the way with 21 for the second straight match. Tournament MVP, Tamara Kauliakamoa had 52 assists in the victory. The Lady Swords outhit and outdug their opponents for the third straight match and improved to 5-2 on the year.

Jessica King led the Nanooks with 18 kills and Alexa Sherman contributed 30 assists. Alaska Fairbanks fell to 1-5 with the loss.

Chaminade returns to action this upcoming Friday, September 8 at home versus the Vulcans of UH-Hilo. First serve is set for 7:30 PM.
