Chaminade Women's Basketball Tops HPU 64-69

Honolulu, HI- With three players in double figures, the Chaminade Women's basketball team defeated Hawaii Pacific University 64-69. The Swords led most of the contest and outrebounded the Sea Warriors 43-37.

At the end of the first half CUH took a 31-38 lead to the locker room. With shooting percentages for both teams being exactly the same, 14-31 (45.2%), it was the Swords free throw shooting that helped them with the edge. Shooting 100% from the line in the first half was Samantha Saito, 4-4, Brittnee Fonnesbeck, 3-3, and Desiree Staples, 1-1.

The second put the Swords at the line for 24 free throw attempts. Freshman Samantha Saito came through when it counted, knocking down 5 clutch free throws and went 9-12 from the line on the night. Second half rebounding continued to be strong for Chaminade as Brittnee Fonnesbeck pulled down 9 boards in the period to help the Swords win the rebounding battle for the evening.

Fonnesbeck led Chaminade, logging a double-double with 14 points, 8 of them coming from the charity stripe. Along with her scoring, Fonnesbeck pulled down a game high 16 rebounds. Katherine Carlisle and Samantha Saito both had double figures in scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively. Simmrin Cummins left the game with only 18 minutes of playing time due to an ankle injury, in that time Cummins had 9 points and 5 rebounds, Desiree Staples finished the night with 9 points but it was her defensive play in the paint that was a big difference.

HPU was led by Shannon Miyashiro with 22 points on the night. With the win Chaminade improves to 4-18. HPU falls to 2-23.

The Swords take on Hawaii Pacific Thursday February 22, 7:00pm at Kilauea District Park.
