Swords Down Nanooks In Season Opener 3-1

Hilo, HI - CUH came out strong in game one of the Hawaiian Style Classic tournament in Hilo, HI, and kept it going through game two against the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Game three saw the UAF Nanooks battle back winning the game, 33-31. The Swords rallied in game four to win 29-21 and take the match 3-1.

Chaminade gave the Nanooks their first loss of the season; the UAF volleyball team got its first official win of the 2007 season, defeating the Hawaii Pacific Sea Warriors 3-1 Thursday night.

Evelyn Bluthenthal led the Swords with her dominating attacks, racking up twenty four kills and only three errors for a .656 attack percentage. Newcomer Tanya Alvino notched 42 assists in the morning match up. Alexandera Beard and Caitlyn Dowd added to the new look of the already powerful Silverswords, as they logged eleven and eight kills respectively. The always swarming defense of Krista Catian dug out ten balls on the day; more than double any other player for the Swords.

The Nanooks were led by Megan Thigpen who had eight kills on the day with a .263 attack percentage and Alexa Sherman set up twenty-five assists.

The Swords next match up will be this afternoon, Friday, August 24, 2007 when they meet up with Briar Cliff at 6:00pm at the Afook Chinen Civic Center.
