Box Score HONOLULU, HI – The Swords faced HPU at Moanalua High School in the PacWest Opener for both teams. Chaminade defeated HPU 75-71.
Chaminade and HPU went back and forth in the opening twenty minutes, with the Sea Warriors leading at the break 37-30. HPU held a decided advantage on the glass in the opening twenty minutes 19-11.
The second half was a completely different story as the Swords shot 65% from the floor and 50% from three (4-8) to come roaring back.
Chaminade senior
Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) had a dominating performance inside, scoring 24 points and adding 7 rebounds in the win. Freshman point guard
Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day) was impressive, especially in the decisive second half, finishing with 22 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds.
Junior
Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C. Wood) added 8 points in 40 minutes of action. Fellow junior,
Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep) showed up big, scoring 13 second half points, good for 15 on the night.
Senior
Rickey Clayborn (Chicago, IL/ E. Chicago) did not play due to injury.
The Swords were beaten on the glass 34-32, but out-shot HPU 53% to 47% on the afternoon.
Coach Bovaird commented on the win: “We had a heck of a second half. We went to full court pressure and created some turnovers. We played some great defense down the stretch.”
Glenn Miller led HPU with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Chaminade's next opponent is Seattle Pacific on December 9
th in McCabe Gym. First-tip is set for 7:30 PM HT.
The Swords improve to 3-3, while HPU falls to 2-4.
