CUH MBB: Chaminade Wins Fast Paced Battle with Academy of Art 89-83

Cousins has 20 points, Bailey 19 in the win

Box Score HONOLULU, HI – The Swords took down the Urban Knights 89-83 in a Pac West Conference affair in McCabe Gym. 
 
The game was up-tempo from the start as Chaminade led 24-17 midway through the first half.  The Swords offense was clicking in the opening twenty minutes as five Chaminade players had at least six points in the first half.  Freshman Lee Bailey had double figures with 12 points in the opening twenty minutes leading the CUH offense. Senior forward Rickey Clayborn (Chicago, IL/E. Chicago) added 6 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in the half.   Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) added 10 points in the first half as Chaminade led 48-40 at the break..  CUH shot 53% and 56% from three in the opening half and held Academy of Art to 36%.      
 
The second half saw a return to a high-scoring, up-tempo affair as CUH led 57-55 just four minutes in to the second half.  Academy of Art took a 58-57 lead on an Ameer Shamsud-din three as the intensity of the contest skyrocketed.  The Urban Knights added nine more points before two Cousins free throws made the score 67-59 with 10:13 remaining.  Chaminade came roaring back as a Rickey Clayborn jumper made it 70-69 CUH with five minutes left. The Swords effort continued as a Darko Vukasovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Yuma) three at the 2:55 mark made it 76-71 Chaminade.  CUH held on down the stretch to win 89-83. 
 
Five players scored in double figures for the Swords.  Senior forward Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) was again a force for CUH with 20 points and 6 rebounds.  Lee Bailey tallied 19 points while junior Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) had a strong second game with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. CUH guard Waly Coulibaly, (Bamako, Mali/Patterson) added 11 points and Vukasovic had a breakout game with 12 points off the bench.  Forward Rickey Clayborn was a standout on both ends, scoring 13 points, corralling 9 rebounds and rejecting 4 shots for the Swords. 
 
The Swords won the rebounding battle 37-31.  Chaminade shot 48% and the Urban Knights shot 41% on the contest. 
 
Academy of Art was led by William Overton with 26 points.
 
Chaminade heads to UH-Hilo on January 14th in UHH Gymnasium. Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT.
 
With the win, the Swords move to 5-5, 3-0 in PWC while Academy of Art drops to 2-12, 0-4 PWC.
