MBB: Chaminade Loses Tough Non-Conference Contest with Cedarville 74-65

Murray leads Swords with 14 points

Box Score HONOLULU, HI– With a contest against the University of Hawaii on the Island of Molokai just a day away, the Swords fell to a tough Cedarville team this evening 74-65 in McCabe Gym.
 
Chaminade senior De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) and freshman Kevin Hu (Taipei, Taiwan/Songsan), were both back in action after sitting out the last road trip.  Their presence was immediately felt for the Swords as Hu and Haskins combined for eight consecutive points following their entrance into the contest at the 15:32 mark in the first half giving the Swords a 14-10 advantage. 
 
Cedarville rallied back and following a made three-pointer led 28-26 with just over five minutes left in the first half. Leading 35-34, the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run and forced a CUH timeout.   
 
Cedarville led at the break 45-34.  Chaminade shot 37% in the half, while the Yellow Jackets shot 58%, including 6-14 from three.  Junior forward Rhys Murphy (Sydney, Australia/Barker) led the Swords with 7 first half points.
 
CUH looked to scrap their way back into the contest, but Cedarville held a 60-47 advantage with just over eleven minutes remaining.  As the Swords continually looked to make a run, timely Cedarville baskets kept Chaminade at bay.  Senior Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep) knocked down two free throws to cut the lead to eight points with 8:05 remaining in the contest.    A lay-up by senior Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C.Wood) cut the lead some more, and CUH trailed by six (58-64) with just under six minutes remaining. While the Silverswords offense was heating up, their defense held the Yellow Jackets in check, holding Cedarville scoreless for over five minutes.   
 
A three by the Yellow Jackets Zach Brown with just over two minutes left gave Cedarville an eleven point lead and helped seal the win.  Cedarville won the contest 74-65.  Bennie Murray led Chaminade with 14 points. 
 
Cedarville was led by Brian Grant with 13 points.  Chaminade shot 36% from the field, while the Yellow Jackets shot 53%.
 
The Swords move to 3-6 on the year and 0-2 in the PacWest. The Yellow Jackets move to 7-5 on the year.  Chaminade will not rest, as the Silverswords head over to Molokai to take part in a historic contest on Saturday night against UH-Manoa.  CUH faces the Rainbow Warriors at 7:30 PM HT at “The Barn” at Molokai High School.  Live audio and live stats can be found at www.goswords.com .
