MBB: Short-Handed Swords Downed at Dixie State 87-78

Bailey and Murray lead Chaminade with 15 points and 6 rebounds each

Box Score ST. GEORGE, UT– Chaminade took on the Red Storm of Dixie State this evening at the Burns Arena on the campus of Dixie State and lost 87-78.

The Silverswords got off to a solid start, taking a 12-8 lead five minutes in following a layup by guard Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day). A 16-3 run by Dixie State over the next six minutes gave the Red Storm a 24-15 advantage. The contest went to the half with the Red Storm owning a 37-30 advantage.

Dixie State tried to keep the margin at a safe distance for most of the second half, but CUH managed to cut the lead to seven points at 72-65 with 4:17 left in the contest with a made three by senior Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep). Brandon Simister connected on a three for Dixie State on the next possession just as the shot-clock expired to help squelch the Swords final rally.  Both Lee Bailey and senior Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C. Wood) each added 15 points and six rebounds to lead CUH in the defeat. Junior forward Rhys Murphy (Sydney, Australia/Barker) added 13 points, going two of six shooting from distance.

Chaminade shot 37% from the field and 37% from three, making 13 three-pointers. The Swords did a nice job on the glass, out-rebounding Dixie State 35-34, including an impressive 18 offensive rebounds. The Red Storm shot 62% from the floor.

Dixie State was led by McKay Massey with 17 points.

Chaminade senior De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) and freshman Kevin Hu (Taipei, Taiwan/Songsan), both standouts in the 2012 EA Sports Maui Invitational, were unable to play tonight due to injury.

Coach Bovaird discussed the defeat: “Our effort was good tonight; we just had one bad stretch in the first half that put us in a hole.  Losing 'Dre and Kevin for this game put us a little short-handed. We'll have to bounce back with a tough opponent in Grand Canyon waiting for us.”

The Swords move to 3-4 on the year and 0-1 in the PacWest. The Red Storm move to 5-2 and 2-0 in the PacWest.  Chaminade is back in action on December 5th in PacWest Conference action.  The Swords will face Grand Canyon at 6:30 PM MT in Phoenix, AZ at GCU Arena.
