SAN FRANCISCO – The Chaminade University men's basketball team opened a three-game road trip with an 82-70 win at Academy of Art Tuesday at the City College of San Francisco.
Rohndell Goodwin had a game-high 23 points for the Silverswords, who amassed school-record 10 blocked shots. Goodwin, from nearby Oakland, also hauled in six rebounds and had three assists as Chaminade improved to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the Pacific West Conference.
Austin Pope had four blocks, the most by a Silversword in nearly two years while
Tyler Cartaino had three swats. Pope also had 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
Kiran Shastri hit five 3-pointers for 17 points and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.
Sam Daly contributed with 12 points while
Kuany Kuany added eight points and eight boards.
The Urban Knights were led by Uchenna Okeneme's 15 points as they fell to 4-8 and 3-3 in the PacWest.
Shastri, Daly and
Nate Pollard also had a hand in the blocks record with one each.
ART U held the lead for a majority of the first half before Pope's three-point play put the visitors up 18-17 at the 8:29 mark. Up 34-29 late in the first half, the 'Swords then went on an offensive binge, outscoring the home team 14-1 in the final 2:35 of the first half to grab a 48-30 halftime cushion.
Chaminade's lead swelled to as many as 24 points halfway through with Goodwin accounting for nine points and Shastri burying a pair of triples.
ART U made things interesting down the stretch, cutting the deficit down to 11 with three minutes left and reducing it down to eight with a minute remaining. However the 'Swords clinched the game by sinking 4 of 6 free throws in the final 60 seconds.
The Silverswords made 10 triples, their fifth straight contest of 10 or more from beyond the arc. They also made 32 trips to the foul line, making 20, both season-highs. They also held the Urban Knights to 37.5 percent shooting in the game and outscored them 21-5 in fast-break points.
The Silverswords will be Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday as they look to capture the season sweep against the Argos.
