Lahaina, Maui - The Swords bid for a second win at the Maui Invitational fell short on Wednesday as the Silverswords lost to San Diego State, 75-67. CU knocked off Villanova on Monday before losing to Hawaii Tuesday in the tournament's semifinals.
In their third game of the season and the tournament, the Swords (1-2) were able to hang close to the Aztecs (3-1) for the first half, trailing just 32-31 at the break. Chaminade jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind a Bryon Sykes basket in the paint and a Roy Stigall 3-pointer.
San Diego State rallied to claim the lead just minutes later and built a 10-point lead with just 3:04 remaining in the opening half. A 9-0 Silverswords run to close the half sent the teams into the locker room with a one-point game. Stigall and Nick Frey combined for all nine points during the run.
A steal and layup by Zack Whiting to open the second half gave Chaminade a 33-32 lead, their first since the 15:58 mark of the first half. The Aztecs answered with a 16-4 run, building an 11-point lead with just under 14 minutes to play. SD State led by as many as 17 midway through the second half before Chaminade made a furious run to close the gap to six in the final half minute.
Sykes led the Silverswords with 14 points, followed by 13 from Chris Acker and ten from Scott Metcalf. Chaminade was out rebounded 43-29 by the larger Aztecs and outscored 15-5 on second chance points.
