BYUH Drops Swords in Laie

Feb. 8, 2004

Laie, HI - The Chaminade University men's basketball team lost a PacWest contest tonight to BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders took a six point lead into the half and withstood a furious Silversword rally late in the game to come away with a 77-66 victory.

BYU-Hawaii led 56-37 after a Smylie basket with 11:21 to play and appeared to be cruising to an easy win. However, Chaminade scored the next eight points to get back into the game and eventually cut the Seasiders' lead to just five points, 67-62, with 1:16 to play. A layup and a pair of free throws by Smylie put the lead back up to nine with under a minute to play and the Seasiders held on by hitting six of eight free throws the rest of the way.

BYUH connected on 54.2 percent of their field goal attempts while holding Chaminade to just 38.1 percent. The Seasiders also outrebounded Chaminade 40-29 on the night.

Bryon Sykes led Chaminade with 17 points and hit four three-pointers. Roy Stigall scored 13, Jason Walters 11, and Donald Rogers 10 for the Swords. With the loss, Chaminade falls to 6-12 for the season and 3-5 in the PacWest.
