HONOLULU, HI - Chaminade head men's basketball coach Aaron Griess announced the addition of seven student athletes to the Chaminade University basketball family for the 2004-05 season.
Joining the Silverswords next fall will be transfers Corey Campbell of Otero Junior College, Chris Hickey of Kirkwood Community College, Dylan McCune from Santa Rosa Junior College, Chris Nelson of Mira Costa Community College, Chris Reaves from Citrus College, Chris Powell of Saddleback Community College, and Iolani School's Ryan Hirata.
Campbell (6-2, guard, San Diego, CA) averaged 13.5 points per game as a sophomore last season for Otero. The junior guard shot 58% from the field and made 47% of his three-point attempts, helping Otero to a 27-4 overall record and a 16th place finish in the final NJCAA division I poll.
Hickey (6-3, guard, Moline, IL) earned All Tournament honors at this year's NJCAA division II national tournament while helping Kirkwood to a 4th place finish. Hickey averaged 13 points and 5.5 rebounds while connecting on 43% from three-point range. Kirkwood finished the season with a 28-9 record and advanced to the national tournament by winning the region-eleven title game.
McCune (6-1, guard, Vancouver, WA) spent the last year helping the Santa Rosa Bear Cubs to a 23-5 record and a second place finish in the Bay Valley West Conference in northern California. The shooting guard averaged 12.3 points while hitting 43% from three-point range in 2003-04. McCune played his freshman season at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington and will have two years of eligibility remaining at Chaminade.
Nelson (6-4, guard-forward, San Marcos, CA) earned Pacific Coast Conference MVP honors while guiding Mira Costa College to a 16-9 overall record. He averaged 18.7 points and 6.5 rebounds on the season. Nelson also earned a spot on the California Community College Athletic Association All State honorable mention team.
Reaves (6-3, guard, Pomona, CA) averaged 16.5 points and 5.8 assists for Citrus College before an injury forced him to the sidelines 16 games into his sophomore season. Reaves shot 45% from the field, connected on 43% of his three-point attempts, and collected 3.8 steals per game. Citrus College finished 16-12 in 2003-04.
Powell (6-7, forward, LaVerne, CA) sat out the 2003-04 season to finish his academic responsibilities. Powell helped Saddleback College to a 29-8 overall record and a third place finish in the California Junior College State Tournament in 2002-03.
Hirata (5-8, guard, Honolulu, HI) earned HHSAA all-tournament honors while helping lead Iolani School to the Hawaii High School State Championship by averaging 12 points and 4 assists on the season. Iolani school finished with a perfect 28-0 record in 2003-04.
