Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii- In the second round of the 2005 EA Sports Maui Invitational, the Swords gave Maryland a scare reminiscent of upsets of the past. Chaminade led 46-44 at the half, and were up double digits in the first half in front of a sold out crowd at the Lahaina Civic Center.
The Swords got out and attacked from the starting tip, and led by as many as eleven late in the first half. With five players scoring eight points or more, Chaminade was able to keep the Terrapins away and led at the break while shooting 52% from the field and 39% from the arc. Zack Whiting nearly broke a Maui Invitational record falling one short of the single game assist record with 14 for the game.
Chris Reaves added 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Marko Kolaric added 11 points and 5 rebounds in defeat. Dylan McCune and Chris Nelson added nine points a piece and together shot a combined 5-11 from the arc.
Maryland was led by Chris McCray with 17 points and Nik Caner-Medley with 16 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Both were major parts of a run to start the second half to put the game out of reach. Chaminade is now set to face the Jayhawks of Kansas on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd at 2:00pm Hawaii time, 7:00pm Eastern time on ESPNU.
