Swords Fall Short in Laie

Feb. 25, 2005

Laie, HI - A Seasider lay-up with four seconds remaining gave BYU-Hawaii a 104-102 win over the Swords tonight in Laie. Chaminade holds a 15-11 record with just one game to play in the 2004-05 season.

Nick Frey's lay-up with ten seconds remaining tied the game at 102-102 before the Seasiders inbounded the ball quickly and found a streaking Seasider for the two point advantage. A desperation half-court attempt fell short at the buzzer for the Swords.

BYU-Hawaii took a 53-45 lead into halftime and extended the advantage to 15 points at 64-49 before Chaminade responded with a 10-0 run. The Swords took a 93-92 lead with 1:42 to play on a pair of Zack Whiting free throws. BYUH answered with two free throws four seconds later, before Chris Reaves' three-pointer put CU up two with 1:18 to go. Thomas Watkins responded with a jump shot but Reaves knocked down a pair of free throws with 30 seconds on the clock to give Chaminade a 98-96 lead. A three point play on the ensuing possession gave BYUH a one point lead and a Chaminade turnover gave the ball back to the Seasiders the ball with 16 seconds to play. The Swords sent Watkins to the line where he sank two free throws for the three point lead, 101-98.

On the inbounds Whiting drew a Seasider foul and calmly hit both free throws with no time going off the clock. Chaminade then fouled Jason Solis, who hit one of two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to set the stage for the game winning play.

Zack Whiting led Chaminade with 30 points on 9-20 shooting including 4-6 from long range and 8-10 from the line. Chris Reaves added 25 and Corey Campbell scored 13 points and handed 5 assists in the loss.
