Chaminade Volleyball Takes Five Game Thriller Over Grand Canyon

Honolulu, HI- In a match for sole possession of second place in the PacWest, Chaminade won a hard fought battle in five games 30-18, 30-32, 22-30, 30-24, 15-11.

The match was back and forth throughout. Chaminade handled game one with relative ease, looking sharp and hitting for their highest percentage of the night (.394). Grand Canyon fought back and scratched out a win in game two, 32-30.

Game three was all Grand Canyon as they out hit and outplayed the Lady Swords for the game three win. Game four appeared to be going the same way as a GCU win looked imminent with the score and serve in the `Lopes favor at 18-13 and a two games to one lead. The tide turned however. Chaminade ripped off a flurry of points and took game four behind the hard hitting of the CUH attack. Trina Kauliakamoa led the attack with 23 kills and 12 digs, while Evelyn Bluthenthal added 16 kills. Vanja Radanovic added 15 kills, while Brittnee Fonnesbeck added 13 kills in the win.

Directing the offense for CUH was Tamara Kauliakamoa with 65 assists on the evening. Chaminade did not look back in game five, finishing off GCU 15-11 for the PacWest victory.

The Sword out hit and out dug GCU on the evening, hitting .216 for the match to go along with 65 digs. Grand Canyon won the war at the net out-blocking Chaminade 17-8.

Grand Canyon fall to third place in the conference with the loss and is now 6-7, 4-2 in league. Chaminade improves to 9-3and 4-1 in the conference. The Swords next head cross-town on Tuesday, September 26 to face Hawaii Pacific. First serve is set for 7:30PM.
