Honolulu, HI- NFL Hall of Fame legendary coach, Vince Lombardi once said, “The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur." The Swords fought hard all night and beat the BYU Hawaii Seasiders, snapping a losing streak of two consecutive seasons.
Kellene Costello, when asked about her initial thoughts coming into the season she said, “I knew that this year we were going to win. Everyday in the gym we work hard, and we are passionate about the game of basketball. It's a great feeling to get one and we are determined to get more!” When asked about being trusted to take the final shot with 10 seconds remaining on the clock, she said, “I was fortunate enough to be in a position to hit the shot and without my teammates and their ability to see me, I wouldn't have had the opportunity. I wouldn't have hit it without the team.”
The Silverswords managed to shoot the ball well all game long. As a team, they shot 50% from the floor, compared to just 38% for the Seasiders. CUH lost the rebounding battle by a close margin; 23-28. Chaminade shot 64% from three point range, hitting 9 of 16 shots from behind the arc.
Kayci Will and Jamie Higa led the way with 12 points a piece. Costello added 9 points and point guard Samantha Saito tacked on 8 points in victory.
BYU Hawaii was led by Dara Tompkison who scored 14 points and grabbed 7 boards. Mahina Gago also added 9 points and Kristen Hartley added 8 points of her own.
With the win, Chaminade improves to 1-2 overall, while BYU Hawaii falls to 3-4 overall. The Silverswords next game is against Drury University in the annual Hoop N Surf tournament. Tip off is set of 1:00PM December 17th. The tournament will be held at the Kilauea Gym in Honolulu.
