CUH MBB: Swords Handle HPU 74-56 in Hawaii Tournament Opener

Chaminade faces BYU-Hawaii in Championship tomorrow at 7:30 in McCabe Gym

HONOLULU, HI- Chaminade defeated HPU 74-56 this evening at the Cannon Activities Center in the opening game of the 2010 Hawaii Tournament.
 
The Swords led 35-26 at the break and extended the lead throughout the second half for an impressive 74-56 win over the Sea Warriors. Senior Shane Hanson (Canyon Lake, CA/Temescal Canyon) led the way for CUH with 24 points and 12 rebounds, knocking down six threes in the win. Senior Steven Bennett (Los Angeles, CA/Dorsey) added 12 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
 
Junior center Mamadou Diarra (Bamako, Mali/ Stoneridge) saw double and triple teams throughout the evening, but still managed 7 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks while battling foul trouble (3 fouls in the opening half). 
 
The Swords received a very solid performance from sophomore Dominique Cooks, who tallied 8 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the win. Junior wings De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) and Chris Curtis (Tustin, CA/Tustin) added 8 points each in the win. Overall, seven Silverswords scored in the victory. 
 
CUH shot 48% from the floor on the evening and limited HPU to just 33% in a very tough defensive effort. Senior Rickey Clayborn added 7 points and 4 rebounds for Chaminade.   
 
Chaminade won the rebounding battle 44-35.   
 
HPU was led by senior Jason Jackson with 19 points and 13 rebounds in defeat.
 
HPU falls to 3-4 on the year with the loss. The Swords improve to 6-4 on the year and face BYU-Hawaii in the Hawaii Tournament Championship game at home in McCabe Gym at 7:30 PM HT. HPU will face UH-Hilo in the consolation game at 5PM HT.
