WBB: Swords Fall in 2012 Oahu Classic Opener to Adams State 72-53

Tauau leads Swords with 13 points

Box Score HONOLULU, HI- The Silverswords started the 2012 Oahu Classic with a contest against the Grizzlies of Adams State in a Thanksgiving evening contest at McKinley HS.
 
Chaminade battled Adams State throughout the contest, and cut the Grizzlies lead to four points at 28-24 following a layup by Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) with eleven seconds left in the half. The Swords did a great job on the glass in the first half, tying Adams State on the glass at 21 rebounds each.
 
The Swords battled the Grizzlies until Adams State seized control late in the contest, leading 50-44 with just less than nine minutes left.  The Grizzlies finished the contest on a 22-9 run to earn the 72-53 win.
 
Chaminade shot 29% from the floor and 11% from three. CUH found success at the charity stripe, shooting 71% from the free throw line.  Senior point guard Dianna Zane (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) led Chaminade with nine rebounds.  Senior guard Nikki Tauau (Oxnard, CA/Pacifica) led CUH with 13 points on the night.
 
The Grizzlies were led by Keyondra White and Elissa Betts with 17 points each on the evening. Adams State out-rebounded CUH 50-35 on the contest.
 
Coach Keanini commented on the game: “Great effort tonight. A lot to work on, but only positives out of this game with Adams State.  I'm very happy with the performance.  We were close until the final five minutes.”
 
With the loss, Chaminade falls to 0-2 on the year.  Adams State moves to 3-1 in preseason play. The Swords next take on Northwood in the 2012 Oahu Classic on Friday, November 23rd at McKinley HS in Honolulu, HI.  Tip is set for 6:00 PM HT.
