WBB: Chaminade Falls to Penguins of Dominican (CA) 95-69

Curtius leads CUH with 15 points in defeat

Box Score HONOLULU, HI- Chaminade fell to the Penguins 95-69 this evening in a PacWest Conference affair in McCabe Gym. 
 
The Swords were down 49-26 at the end of the first half, as Dominican's Kimi Nakamura connected on four three pointers in the opening twenty minutes, scoring 14 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor for DUC.
 
Chaminade shot 33% from the floor in the opening half, while the Penguins shot 41%.  The Swords battled, but struggled with turnovers, committing 24 in the first half.  Freshman Shana Kawakami (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) led the Swords with 7 points in the half.    
 
Dominican led 51-28 just moments into the second half before Chaminade again showed true grit, answering the Penguins large lead with an impressive 9-0 run to cut the DUC lead to 51-37 with 17:02 left in the contest.  Dominican would not the Silverswords get any closer leading 71-44 halfway through the second half and finished off the victory, winning 95-69.
 
Sophomore Hanna Curtius (Medford, OR/South Medford) led CUH with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Shana Kawakami added 11 points in defeat.  The Silverswords shot 40% from the floor and the Penguins connected on 40% of their shots as well. CUH committed 40 turnovers on the night. Senior forward Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) had double-figures again for CUH, scoring 10 points in twenty minutes of action.
 
Freshman Kennedi Akana (Kailua, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) led CUH with 7 rebounds. 
 
Dominican was led by Julia Brew with 21 points and 7 rebounds.
 
With the defeat, Chaminade moves to 1-8, 1-3 PWC.  Dominican moves to 4-8, 2-2 PWC on the year. The Swords take on Academy of Art on Wednesday, January 9th in McCabe Gym.  Tip is set for 5:00 PM HT.
