WBB: Silverswords Drop Contest to UH-Hilo 64-48

Kawakami leads CUH with 14 points

Box Score HONOLULU, HI- The Silverswords fell to Hawaii-Hilo this evening 64-48 in a PacWest Conference matchup in McCabe Gym.
 
The Vulcans got out to a quick 7-0 lead before Chaminade responded, making it 21-12 following a Shana Kawakami (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) three with under nine minutes left in the first half.    UHH responded with an 18-8 run to end the half to lead by 18 points at the break (38-20). Kawakami and freshman forward Kennedi Akana (Kailua, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) each had seven first half points to pace Chaminade. 
 
The Swords struggled from the floor, shooting 19%, while the Vulcans shot 54% in the half.  The Silverswords held their own on the glass, corralling 15 rebounds to UHH's 20. 
 
Hilo looked to have a comfortable 55-35 lead midway through the second half, but Chaminade went on a 9-1 run and trailed 56-44 with just under six minutes following a Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) layup.  The Swords could get no closer as UHH won 64-48. 
 
The Vulcans out-rebounded CUH 39-29.  Kawakami led CUH with 14 points while junior Markeshia Manning (Kapolei, HI/Pearl City) had 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Swords. Chaminade shot 30% from the floor while UHH shot 47%. 
 
Hawaii-Hilo was led by Jazlyn Afusia with 13 points
 
With the defeat, Chaminade moves to 1-16, 1-11 PWC.  With the win, Hawaii-Hilo moves to 11-7, 8-4 in the PWC on the year. The Swords face BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, February 9th at McCabe Gym. Tip is set for 5:00 PM HT.
