Red Storm Cruise Past ’Swords, 93-69

Kristle Henry scored a season-high 15 points against Dixie State.
Box Score HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team returned from the Christmas break looking for a fresh start to the New Year, but couldn't overcome Dixie State in its first game of 2014, falling 93-69 in a Pacific West Conference contest Saturday night at McCabe Gym.

The Silverswords fell to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in the PacWest. The Red Storm improved to 5-6 and 3-2 in the conference.

The rust was apparent in the beginning as the Silverswords, who hadn't played since Dec. 19, fell behind 16-2 seven minutes into the game, eventually trailing by as many as 17. However, Chaminade weathered the Storm, keeping the deficit between 12-to-16 the rest of the first half. The Silverswords went into halftime down, 47-31.

Both teams struggled from the field with Dixie State making only 35.9 percent from the floor at the half while Chaminade was at 28.6. However, the 'Swords were outrebounded significantly, 36-17.

A 12-6 run by the visitors to open the second half pushed CUH's deficit to 20 points and the Red Storm never looked back the remainder of the game.

CUH was led by freshman Kristle Henry who scored a season-high 15 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Glacen Florita had 13 points and four rebounds, while Kennedi Akana had 11 points and six boards. Lilia Maio rounded out the double-digit scorers for the 'Swords with 10 points.

Kaylah Miller had a team-high 15 points while Taylor Mann tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams shot significantly better from the floor in the second half at 41 percent (Dixie State) and 45.5 (Chaminade). But the rebounding margin in the end proved to be a factor with the Red Storm out-rebounding the Silverswords, 61-38. Both squads also struggled to take care of the ball with 44 combined turnovers.

The 'Swords return to action on Monday when they face Dominican at 5 p.m. Streaming audio of the game will be on goswords.com.
