LAIE, O'ahu – The Chaminade University men's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot-shooting BYU-Hawai'i squad Saturday, dropping a 104-87 Pacific West Conference decision at the Cannon Activities Center.
The 23
rd-ranked Seasiders (6-0 overall, 2-0 PacWest) shot 56.7 percent from the floor and had four players in double-figure scoring, led by Pablo Coro's 20 points.
Lee Bailey led five Silverswords in double-digits with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Kiran Shastri followed with 16 while
Kuany Kuany had 15.
Kevin Hu dropped in 13 while
James Harper had 10.
Chaminade (3-4, 1-1) shot a respectable 47 percent from the floor, but was held to only five 3-pointers on the night. The Seasiders hit 10 from beyond the arc. The 'Swords managed to get to the foul line 41 times, but made only 28. Twenty-three of BYUH's 38 baskets were assisted.
BYUH used a 10-2 run early to grab a 9-point advantage at 18-9 early in the game. The teams traded scores before the Seasiders were able to get their first double-digit lead with 10:26 left in the half at 33-22. Chaminade managed to get the deficit back down to single digits several times thereafter, but BYUH got a Scott Friel bucket to hold a 51-40 halftime lead.
The Seasiders maintained a double-digit lead for most of the first six minutes of the second half then the Silverswords made a run. Bailey scored six of the team's next eight points as the 'Swords got to within 72-67 with 12:17 remaining. But Luke Aston and Daniel Berger combined for 15 BYUH points in a key stretch that helped put the game away for the home team.
The 'Swords return to non-conference action on Monday, Dec. 15, when they face Montana State-Billings at McCabe Gym. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m. with live streaming audio available at GoSwords.com.
