SAN FRANCISCO – The Chaminade University women's basketball team was seeking their first-ever three-game win streak on Monday. That feat will have to wait a little while longer as the Silverswords saw their victory streak halted in an 80-61 loss to Academy of Art at Kezar Pavilion.
Sophomore guard
Kristle Henry scored a team-high 17 points with three rebounds and four steals for the Silverswords, who fell to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in the Pacific West Conference.
Lilia Maio added 12 points and a career-high five steals.
Glacen Florita contributed with 10 points and five rebounds.
Kennedi Akana pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
The Urban Knights (11-6, 6-3) were led by Jasmin Guinn's 22 points while Zoie Sheng had 20.
The 'Swords, who came into the contest ranking second in the PacWest in steals per game at 8.9, had 18 thefts, tied for third-most in program history.
The Silverswords got off to a slow start as ART U scored the game's first 15 points.
Katie Buskey finally ended the 'Swords scoreless drought with a field goal at the 15:23 mark of the first half. Chaminade continued its cold shooting on the floor for most of the half as it only had two field goals in the first 15 minutes as the Urban Knights led 40-10 at that point.
The 'Swords finally got the ball to drop through the hoop in the waning minutes of the half as
Carissa McBride, Henry and Akana got buckets to put the 'Swords down 47-24 at the break.
ART U continued to add on in the opening minutes of the second half, leading by as many as 34. However, the 'Swords put up a battle the rest of the way. Henry and McBride had two buckets each while
Hanna Curtius and Florita each nailed 3-pointers to reduce the deficit to 63-40 with less than 12 minutes left.
The Urban Knights again built their lead to 28, but the 'Swords scrapped their way in the game's final seven minutes, outscoring them 17-8. The Silverswords also outscored ART U 37-33 in the second half.
ART U held a decisive advantage on the boards 56-28 while shooting 44 percent from the floor. Despite 21 giveaways, the 'Swords were able to force 26 Urban Knight turnovers.
The Silverswords continue their road trip Thursday when they face Dominican.
