OAKLAND, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team concluded their first Mainland road trip of the season with a 105-73 win over Holy Names Saturday at Tobin Gym.
The Silverswords (7-9 overall, 4-6 Pacific West Conference) got their highest scoring game of the season with six players in double figures and used a 16-0 run to start the second half to turn a one-point halftime lead into a runaway.
Junior guard
Kevin Hu notched his first-career double-double, establishing career-highs with 35 points and 11 rebounds to help the 'Swords snap a two-game losing streak. The Taipei, Taiwan native was 12-of-18 from the floor and 11-of-14 from the free throw line.
Kuany Kuany also posted a double-double for Chaminade with 16 points and 10 boards, his second of the season, hitting 7-of-8 shots from the field.
AJ Mathew, making his first start of the season, tied his career-best with 13 points while
Oscar Pedroso established his season-high with 10.
James Harper added 11 points while
Kiran Shastri had 10.
Dante Robinson led the Hawks (3-16, 1-10) with 15 points.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 13-7 lead less than five minutes into the first half. Hu and Kuany combined for eight points to tie the game at 15, then Shastri's triple gave the 'Swords an 18-15 lead at the 12:12 mark. Chaminade's lead grew by as much as nine before HNU responded late in the half and tied it at 45. Hu's free throw with 40 seconds left gave the 'Swords a 46-45 lead at halftime.
The start of the second half belonged to Hu as he dropped seven straight points as the 'Swords held the Hawks scoreless the first four minutes after halftime to take a commanding 62-45 lead. The Silverswords outscored the Hawks, 59-28, in the second period.
Chaminade shot 56.5 percent from the floor (39-of-69), including over 60 percent in the second half while holding Holy Names to 40 percent from the field. The Silverswords also out-rebounded the Hawks, 46-33, and hit 20-of-26 from the free throw line.
The 'Swords were able to get production despite an off-night from All-PacWest guard
Lee Bailey, who was held scoreless for only the second time in his career and the first since his sophomore season, a span of 58 games.
Chaminade finished its Bay Area swing with a 2-2 mark. The team went the entire road trip without head coach
Eric Bovaird as he and his wife, Leigh, are expecting the birth of their third child. Assistant coach
Darrell Matsui took over the helm as the interim head coach during the trip.
