Men’s Hoops Runs Past Fresno Pacific

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's basketball team returned home from a rough Southern California road trip with a 114-91 win over Fresno Pacific at McCabe Gym on Saturday.

Rohndell Goodwin and Kuany Kuany each had double-doubles as six Silverswords got into double-figures in scoring. Goodwin poured in 28 points and had 15 rebounds – both season-highs – while Kuany added 16 points and 11 boards as the 'Swords improved to 6-9 and 4-4 in the Pacific West Conference.

Gabe Solarin led the Sunbirds (8-7, 4-5) with 22 points.

Goodwin was 10-of-15 from the floor as he and Kiran Shastri (16 points) each buried four 3-pointers. Kevin Hu added 14 points followed by Oscar Pedroso (12) and Sam Daly (10). Daly also dished out five assists.

The Silverswords experienced a scoring spree with 63 first-half points, the most they've had during the first 20 minutes this season. Midway through the half with the 'Swords holding on to a 27-24 lead, Kuany's layup, followed by a Tyler Cartaino jumper and Shastri's triple and capped by Pedroso's layup gave them their first double-digit lead of the game at  36-26. Then buckets from Dantley Walker and Goodwin with a pair of James Harper free throws and a Shastri 3-ball helped give Chaminade a 16-point lead.

David Ware's corner 3 gave the Silverswords their largest lead of the half at 19 with 96 seconds left but Solarin accounted for the remainder of the half's points as Chaminade took a 63-49 halftime lead.

Fresno Pacific made things interesting early in the second half, cutting the lead to as little as seven just four minutes. However, Harper's layup and Kuany's 3-pointer pushed the lead back to double-digits. And Goodwin's final trifecta of the night also helped spark an 11-1 run to put the game out of reach. Even reserve forward Michael Sakazaki got into the fun, hitting his first career 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Chaminade shot just under 53 percent in the game while holding Fresno Pacific to only 39.7. The Silverswords also dominated on the glass, 51-36. Both teams had proficient nights from beyond the arc with the 'Swords draining 14 3-pointers while the Sunbirds had 12. They also took advantage of 54 combined fouls with Chaminade making 24 of 33 from the free throw line while FPU was 21 of 32.

Prior to the game, Hu and Kuany were presented with game balls celebrating their recent feats in reaching 1,000 career points.
