’Swords Fall to Tennessee in Maui Finale

LAHAINA, Maui, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's basketball team wrapped up the 33rd Annual Maui Jim Maui Invitational with a 95-81 loss to Tennessee in the seventh-place game Wednesday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Rohndell Goodwin hit for a game-high 22 points while pulling down eight rebounds for the Silverswords who fell to 2-3 on the season.

Kiran Shastri added 19 points in his final Maui Jim Maui Invitational game, hitting 3 of his 9 3-point attempts.  Sam Daly had 12 points while Austin Pope added 10. Also playing in his final Maui Jim Maui Invitational game, Kuany Kuany had seven points and five boards.

Robert Hubbs III had a game-high 28 points for the Volunteers (2-3).

Goodwin had 60 points (20.0 points average) during the three days against high-level Division I competition, the most by a Silversword since De'Andre Haskins scored 73 (24.3 ppg) in the 2012 Invitational.

The 'Swords built a 16-13 lead with the help of six points each from Kuany and Shastri as they were 6-of-8 from the floor. Tennessee then took the lead on an 18-7 run and eventually built a 10-point advantage. But Goodwin and Daly combined for six points to reduce the deficit to four late in the half but the Vols managed to extend to a 51-40 halftime lead.

Tennessee built its lead to double-digits early in the second half but Chaminade refused to go away as they kept the deficit between 10 and 13 points. The 'Swords managed to shave the lead down to eight before the Vols managed to re-establish a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

After being out-rebounded badly against North Carolina and UConn in the first two games, the Silverswords were only out-boarded by one against Tennessee 36-35. They also made nine triples and hit 16 of 21 free throw attempts.

"For the most part (of) three games, we played really, really hard," Chaminade head coach Eric Bovaird said. "I think one of the big differences between Division I and Division II is the depth. I'm really proud of them and we will get better and learn from this experience and we will be on a mission to get a national championship in Division II."

The Silverswords will open Pacific West Conference action next Wednesday when they host Hawai'i Hilo at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with live audio coverage on GoSwords.com.
