HONOLULU – In a key early season Pacific West Conference match-up, the Chaminade University men's basketball team fell to intercity rival Hawai'i Pacific University, 80-73, Sunday at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
Rohndell Goodwin had a career-high 31 points with a season-best 12 rebounds for the Silverswords, who fell to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the PacWest.
The Sharks were led by Chauncey Orr's 18 points and 11 rebounds and remaining undefeated at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Kuany Kuany contributed with 12 points as he moved past Zack Whiting into eighth in the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,376 points.
Austin Pope and
Sam Daly added 11.
Kiran Shastri had eight points in the loss as the 'Swords bench as held without a point. Pope and Kuany had eight boards each while Goodwin had three assists.
HPU scored the game's first five points, built a nine-point halftime lead as Chaminade's deficit swelled to 16 midway through the second half. But the 'Swords made a run as Goodwin scored nine consecutive points to bring them to within four at 69-65 with 5:39 left to play.
But it would be as close as the Silverswords could get as the Sharks had an answer for each score they made down the stretch.
The 'Swords made a season-low five 3-pointers and had only seven assists while the Sharks made 11 triples. They were also out-rebounded 46-40.
It was Chaminade's third straight loss to HPU dating back to last year.
The Silverswords face Hawai'i Hilo on the Big Island Saturday.
