’Swords Roll Past Holy Names 114-83

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team continues to put up big numbers against Holy Names University.

For the fourth time in the last five meetings against the Hawks, the Silverswords hit the century mark on the scoreboard, cruising to a 114-83 win Monday at Tobin Gymnasium.

Rohndell Goodwin returned to his hometown for the first time as a 'Sword and hit for a game-high 22 points in the victory. He also went 3-for-6 from 3-point range and pulled down seven rebounds. Kuany Kuany added 19 points and 10 boards, giving him his third straight double-double and his league-leading 11th of the season.

A total of six Silverswords scored in double-digits. Aside from Goodwin and Kuany, Oscar Pedroso had 17 points while James Harper had 11 and Sam Daly 10. Dantley Walker and Pedroso set career-highs with Walker scoring 12 points and Pedroso with seven rebounds as Chaminade improved to 9-11 overall and 7-6 in the Pacific West Conference.

The Silverswords have averaged 102 points in their last five games against the Hawks and have won all seven meetings since HNU joined the PacWest in 2012-13. It was also Chaminade's seventh 100-point contest this season.

Holy Names (3-19, 2-13 PacWest) was led by Isaiah Juarez and Joshua Crum who had 14 points apiece.

The Hawks held the lead for the game's first 2:19 when Pedroso's layup gave the Silverswords a 3-2 edge. The Chaminade defense also made its mark, holding HNU to three field goals in the game's first 11 1/2 minutes. Holy Names didn't make consecutive baskets until there was 6:14 left in the first half and by then, the 'Swords were already up by double-digits. Walker's third 3-pointer of the game put Chaminade up 39-17 with 4:37 left before halftime. The Silverswords held a 49-27 lead at intermission.

HNU outscored the 'Swords, 15-6, to start the second half, tightening Chaminade's lead to 55-42. But Kuany scored six points as the Silverswords went on a 12-0 run to help end all notions of a rally. Chaminade scored 65 second-half points and led by as many as 39 late in the contest.

The Silverswords shot 52.1 percent from the floor to the Hawks' 46.5. Both teams shot well over 50 percent in the second half with CUH hitting 57.1 percent and HNU 59.5. The 'Swords dominated on the glass, 49-34, tying their highest rebound differential this season. Chaminade also went to the line 39 times, making 32 for 82.1 percent while the Hawks were 11-of-22 from the foul line.

The Silverswords also forced 19 turnovers while committing 12 and had 10 steals.

The win moved Chaminade into a tie with Dominican for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming PacWest Tournament next month after the Penguins were upset by Hawai'i-Hilo just minutes after the Silverswords' win on Monday. Chaminade and Dominican will square off Thursday in San Rafael, California. The Silverswords won the first meeting in Honolulu earlier this season.
