’Swords Drop Road Opener at ART U

SAN FRANCISCO – The Chaminade University women's basketball team opened a three-game road swing with a 71-58 loss to Academy of Art Tuesday at the City of College of San Francisco.

Courtney Kaupu paced the Silverswords with 13 points while Lilia Maio had 11 and Kristle Henry had 10 points along with seven rebounds and four assists. Chaminade fell to 1-12 overall and 1-8 in the Pacific West Conference.

Rodericka Ware led the Urban Knights (9-5, 5-1 PacWest) with 23 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Maio's 11 points gives her 1,127 in her career, leaving her just 15 points away from surpassing Samantha Saito's career record of 1,141.

Destiny Castro added eight points and eight rebounds for the 'Swords while Carissa Webb had seven points and six boards.

ART U ran off the game's first seven points and led 11-3 four minutes into the game before Chaminade mounted a rally with back-to-back buckets from Maio and Chantal Yadao. The Urban Knights grabbed their largest first-quarter lead at 17-8 before Henry's four points and a Kaupu 3-pointer cut the deficit to 19-15 at the end of the quarter.

Chaminade continued to cut into the deficit then took a 26-25 lead on Destiny Castro's two free throws. Henry and Kaupu then combined for all of the 'Swords' points as their 8-1 run to finish the first half gave them a 34-28 lead at halftime.

Chaminade built on its lead in the third quarter as Taylor Babbitt's triple gave the Silverswords their largest lead of the game at 45-36 midway through the quarter. But the 'Swords continued to experience late third quarter woes, committing six turnovers in the final four minutes as ART U went ahead 48-47 going into the fourth.

The 'Swords managed to force a 53-all tie minutes into the fourth behind Kaupu's second 3-ball of the night but the Urban Knights went on an 11-0 run during a seven-minute span to stave off the upset.

After shooting nearly 36 percent from the field in the first half and allowing ART U only 33 percent, Chaminade was held to only 26.5 percent in the second, hitting only 9 of 34 while the Urban Knights were 15 of 37 (40.5 percent). Twelve of the 'Swords 19 giveaways were in the second half. Chaminade managed to hold ART U to a season-low two made 3-pointers, just three days after the Urban Knights hit a season-high 14 against Dominican University of California.

The Silverswords will be at Notre Dame de Namur Thursday where Maio will have a chance to break the program's all-time scoring record.
