LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's soccer team ended their long 11-day, four-match road trip with a 1-0 win over Biola in the first-ever meeting between the two programs Saturday at Al Barbour Field.
Nick Kraus (Torrance, Calif./South) accounted for the match's lone goal coming in the 69
th minute to propel the Silverswords as they improved to 3-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Pacific West Conference.
The Eagles, who had won their previous three home matches, fell to 5-6-1 and 4-3 in the PacWest.
After a long defensive battle, Kraus stole the ball from about 30 yards from the goal in Biola territory. The sophomore then eluded one defender, was engaged one-on-one against another as he dribbled just inside the 18-yard box. He then fired it past charging BU goalkeeper Igor Puglia for his team-leading third goal of the season.
From there, the 'Swords' defense kept the Eagles at bay, holding them to just two shots but also prevented them from getting quality looks at the goal.
Bernd Buescherhoff (Steinfeld, Germany/Gymnasium Lohne) made three saves in earning the win and his second shutout of the season.
Chaminade took 13 shots on the night, three on-goal.
Avinash Singh (Pukalani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and
Micah Mokulehua (Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kaiser) took the other SOGs.
The win in the area was the 'Swords' first since October 13, 2012 when they knocked off Point Loma in San Diego. Southern California is considered to be the PacWest's soccer power region.
The Silverswords play their final four home matches of the season Thursday against conference-leading Notre Dame de Namur at Saint Louis Field.
