LAHAINA, Maui, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's basketball team fell to Michigan, 102-64, in the second day of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Braden Koelliker (Kaysville, Utah/Colorado State) led the Silverswords with 15 points as they fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Wolverines, a Sweet 16 team a year ago, improved to 4-2 on the year with Charles Matthews leading the way with 22 points. Matthews hit all eight shot attempts with his only miss coming at the free throw line.
Austin Pope (Burbank, Calif./North Idaho College) added 10 points, six rebounds and an assist.
Dantley Walker (Panaca, Nev./UNLV) and
Erik Scheive (Marysville, Calif./Yuba College) had eight each.
Walker opened the scoring with a triple in the opening minute but the Wolverines scored the next 11 points. The 'Swords managed to reduce the deficit to five but a 14-2 run gave Michigan a 30-13.
Chaminade answered with a layup from
Grant Dressler (Las Vegas/Sacramento State) and a 3-pointer from
Justin Bridges (Atlanta/Georgia Highlands) to close to 32-19, but the Wolverines went on a 12-6 run the remainder of the half to lead 44-25 at the break.
The 'Swords managed to find the basket on a more consistent basis in the opening 10 minutes in second half but Michigan match them point-for-point and eventually pulled away even further.
Chaminade was held to 38.1 percent from the floor while Michigan shot over 60 percent in both halves on-route to a near-65 percentage on the afternoon. The Silverswords were also just 5-for-22 from the 3-point arc with the Wolverines hitting 15-of-28. UM also had 22 assists to eight turnovers while CUH had nine helpers and 13 giveaways.
The Silverswords will wrap the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Wednesday against California in the seventh-place game. Tipoff is set for 9:30 a.m. on ESPNU while NBC Sports Radio on AM1500 will have local radio coverage.
