Women’s Hoops Defeated by ART U

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team began their season-ending three-game home stand, falling to Academy of Art, 75-64, Saturday at McCabe Gym.

Lilia Maio tied her season-high by recording her second consecutive 24-point game in defeat as the Silverswords fell to 3-19 overall and 3-15 in the Pacific West Conference. It's the third time this season with 24, just two shy of her career high.

Meanwhile Destiny Castro scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter and also pulled down eight rebounds, dished out five assists and had five steals. Maio contributed with six boards and three assists while Kristle Henry tied Samantha Saito's career steals record of 166 with two thefts in the contest.

Alana Simon had 21 points for the Urban Knights (13-10, 9-6 PacWest) who snapped their three-game losing streak.

Chaminade jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter but ART U's 9-0 run gave the visitors its first lead of 15-14 later in the quarter. Carissa Webb's 3-pointer with 28 seconds left in the first put the 'Swords up 19-17 but the Urban Knights responded on a 12-0 run spanning the first and second stanzas to give them the lead for good.

ART U opened up an 18-point lead late in the third but Maio scored six straight to narrow CUH's deficit to 52-42 before Academy of Art took control in the fourth with a 20-point lead. But the Silverswords had no quit as layups from Taylor Babbitt and Maio started an 11-0 spurt with Castro scoring the final seven points in the run.

Although Chaminade shot 37.5 percent from the floor in the game, they were 52.6 in the fourth quarter and forced 21 ART U turnovers.

The Silverswords face Point Loma next Saturday in their penultimate game of the season at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. with live streaming audio on GoSwords.com.
