HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team returned to their home pitch but suffered a 4-1 loss Thursday to Holy Names at Saint Louis Field.
The Hawks stunned the Silverswords behind Carlos Vazquez-Perez's three goals, two of which came in the match's first 14 minutes.
Senior
Avinash Singh (Pukalani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) accounted for the 'Swords' lone goal, coming with just 22 seconds left before halftime. The score came when a
Nick Krause (Torrance, Calif./South) corner kick made to the front of the HNU net where a scrum ensued.
Makoto Shoji (Okinawa, Japan/Rio Hondo College) made a touch pass which was poked by Singh past Holy Names keeper Juan Nieves, giving the senior defender his first goal since his freshman season in 2014.
The goal cut the deficit to 3-1 at the break but HNU survived 15 second-half shots by the 'Swords and added Vazquez-Perez's third goal for a hat trick in the 71
st minute.
Kraus, Shoji and
Curtis Coburn (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) each attempted three shots for Chaminade which fell to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the Pacific West Conference.
Bernd Buescherhoff (Steinfeld, Germay/Gymnasium Lohne) made three saves in taking the loss. Nieves had six stops and got the win for Holy Names which improved to 1-6 and 1-1 in the PacWest.
The Silverswords return to action Tuesday when they meet Academy of Art at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
