Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Bell Sets Percentage Mark in Sweep of Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – As the Chaminade University women's volleyball team continued to march towards a historic season, middle blocker Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College/Calvin Christian HS) made some of her own in Tuesday's 25-11, 25-17, 25-18 win over Holy Names at Tobin Gymnasium.

With 11 kills and no hitting errors on 12 swings, Bell's staggering .917 hitting percentage not only set a school record but another between two Pacific West Conference opponents.

And, oh by the way, Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) who was named on Monday as the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week, put down a match-high 14 kills while hitting .303 on the night. She also had eight digs, three blocks and a service ace.

The Silverswords improved to 18-4 overall and 12-4 in the PacWest to complete the season sweep. They have also won five consecutive matches and eight of their last nine.

Bell's percentage was the highest in the PacWest since Oct. 9, 2007 when Grand Canyon's Shea Robinson set a conference-record with .923 (12-0-13) against Southwestern College.

The Hawks were led by Maddy Standley's six kills as they fell to 3-19 and 2-14 in the PacWest. Chaminade has won the last seven meetings in the series.

Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman/Burlington-Edison) had nine kills and 15 digs while Tate Lutu (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts) had a career-high six kills. Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) followed with five kills and added 11 digs and two aces.

Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) dished out 22 assists while Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) had 12 and two aces.

The 'Swords used a 12-5 run in the first set for a convincing 1-0 lead, committing no attacking errors while hitting .586 in the set.

However, the second was much closer with neither team being able to make a run in the early stages of the frame. But Chaminade went on a set-ending 8-1 surge to take a 2-0 lead. Handy accounted for 3 1/2 points in the run with two kills and teamed with Terezie Cernosek (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) on a block for another half-point.

Chaminade opened up a 12-4 advantage in the third set before the Hawks rallied and closed to 13-10. But the 'Swords got back-to-back kills from Handy and Zanon to help build a four-point lead then a 5-0 run helped put the match out of reach.

Chaminade hit .305 while holding Holy Names to just .042 on the night. The 'Swords also had 46 kills, 43 assists, 51 digs, seven aces and five total blocks to the Hawks' 22 kills, 22 assists, 38 digs, five aces and four blocks.

The 'Swords remained in fifth place of the PacWest but are just a half-game behind third-place co-holders Hawai'i Hilo and Point Loma (12-3). Just two games separate Chaminade from first-place Azusa Pacific which defeated previous first-place Biola on Tuesday.

The Silverswords return to action Thursday at Notre Dame de Namur.
