’Swords, Vulcans Battle to 0-0 Draw

HONOLULU – For the second straight outing, the Chaminade University women's soccer team had to settle for a draw.

Eight days after a 2-2 deadlock at Hawai'i Pacific University, the Silverswords and the University of Hawai'i Hilo settled for a 0-0 tie Friday at Saint Louis Field.

It is just the third scoreless draw in the history of the program. Chaminade's last nil-nil count was just over a year ago against UH Hilo.

The tie left the 'Swords with a 0-1-2 mark while the Vulcans are 1-3-2. The match did not count in the Pacific West Conference standings and will not count in this year's PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.

'Swords goalkeeper Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) didn't get her first career win but did tally her first career clean sheet, surviving eight of Vulcans shots in the second 45 minutes and four more in the first overtime, keeping a total of nine from entering the net. She also made three stops in a span of less than a minute in the first overtime. This after a first half that saw Chaminade out-shoot UH Hilo, 5-4.

Defenses for both sides stepped up in the second overtime session with just one shot being taken.

Breanna-Leigh Bactista (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and Sharon Kane (Honolulu/Kamehameha-Kapalama) each attempted two shots with one coming on goal. April Barnes (Anahola, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kapa'a) also took a pair of shots in a reserve role. Cailla Fabro (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Idaho State/Pearl City HS) took one shot.

Bailey Cahill made two saves for UH Hilo.

The Silverswords open PacWest action Sunday against Notre Dame de Namur at the Saint Louis Field pitch at 1 p.m. For the first time ever, live video of soccer at home will be available for fans on a pay-per-view basis for all PacWest match-ups.
