’Swords Roar Past Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Chaminade University men's basketball team wrapped up the PacWest/GNAC Challenge Sunday with an 85-56 win over host Alaska Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) had a game-high 20 points to earn Challenge Most Outstanding Player honors to help the Silverswords to improve to 2-0.

Telly Davenport (Idaho Falls, Idaho/College of Southern Idaho/Bonneville HS) and Andre Arissol (Northampton, England/Otero JC/Charnwood HS) each had 14 with Kevin Kremer (Chico, Calif./Utah/Pleasant Valley HS) adding 13.

Kendall Small (Lakewood, Calif./Pacific/Mayfair HS) had seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He and Arissol were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Chaminade earned its eighth straight victory in the Challenge against the Alaska schools. The 'Swords' last loss in the four-team format (which includes Hawai'i Pacific University) was in November 2016 against the University of Alaska.

Nine of the 10 players who got into the game made at least one field goal.

The Seawolves, who suffered their first loss of the year to fall to 2-1, were led by Tobin Karlberg's 14 points.

A day after dishing out 30 assists on 37 field goals, the 'Swords did much of the same against UAA, dropping 28 dimes on 33 made shots. Like Small, Davenport and Arissol also had six assists.

Alaska Anchorage led 8-7 early on but a bucket from Eliet Donley (Yokosuka, Japan/Hayfield) put the 'Swords ahead for good. Later in the half, a 3-pointer from Arissol gave them their first double-digit lead of game at 28-16.

After a Karlberg basket made it 30-20, Chaminade ended the half on an 18-3 surge, holding the Seawolves to just one field goal in the final five minutes.

The Silverswords led by as many as 34 in the second half.

CUH shot 49.3 percent from the floor while holding UAA to 34.4 and controlled the glass, 48-29.

The Silverswords are off for the next 14 days as they prepare for their return to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Monday, Nov. 25 against nationally-ranked Kansas. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center with national television coverage on ESPNU.
