HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's soccer team ended the 2019 season with a 1-0 loss Saturday to the University of Hawai'i Hilo at UH Hilo Baseball Stadium.
The Silverswords ended the season at 3-8-3 overall, tying the 2014 and '17 teams for the second-most wins in a season. They also finished 3-7-1 Pacific West Conference.
The Vulcans ended the season 6-7-4 and 5-4-2 in the PacWest.
After a scoreless first half and a light drizzle falling to start the second, the Vulcans nearly found the net in the 53rd minute but
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made a diving save with the striker just in front of goal.
However UH Hilo's Christina Kanellou struck a few minutes later on a left-footed shot for what was ultimately the game's only score.
The 'Swords nearly answered on the other end with a
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City HS) shot from 15 yards out but UH Hilo keeper Bailey Cahill was in the right place for the stop.
Senior
Cierra Toledo-Muragin (Hilo, Hawai'i/Waiakea), who grew up in Hilo, attended high school nearby and playing in her final collegiate game, made one final attempt to tie the contest in the 83rd minute but the shot sailed to the right.
Toledo-Muragin attempted a team-high two shots for Chaminade as did
Kirstin Wong (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel).
Breanna-Leigh Bactista (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) attempted the Silverswords' other shot.
Takata made four saves for the 'Swords while Cahill made one for UH Hilo.
The win gave the Vulcans the second-place points in the PacWest Hawai'i. Hawai'i Pacific University took the first place points while Chaminade gets the third-place points.
