Men’s Hoops Gets Back on Winning Track

OAKLAND, Calif. – With their top scorer sidelined for the final 16 minutes, the Chaminade University men's basketball team on Tuesday willed their way to a 90-64 win over Holy Names at Tobin Gymnasium.

Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), Eliet Donley (Yokosuka, Japan/Hayfield, Va., HS) and Bill Awet (Sydney, Australia/SIU Edwardsville/Victory Rock Prep, Fla., HS) all posted career highs in scoring as the Silverswords were forced to go most of the second half without leading scorer Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park).

Amaral-Artharee poured in 16 points while Donley and Awet each added 15 in the win. Kendall Small (Lakewood, Calif./Pacific/Mayfair HS) had 11 as did Cartaino.

Chaminade improved to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Pacific West Conference while Holy Names saw its three-game winning streak snapped in dropping to 4-5 and 2-1 in the conference. Rob Fuller and Justin Chambers had 10 each for the Hawks.

With Chaminade hanging on to a 46-37 lead with 16:04 left in the game, Cartaino picked up his fourth personal foul on a charging call. He then was assessed a technical foul which gave him his fifth, forcing him to the bench for the game's final 16 minutes.

After the Hawks sank both free throws to draw to within 46-39, the rest of the 'Swords rallied. Amaral-Artharee sandwiched a 21-5 run over the next five minutes with a pair of 3-pointers while Awet had six during the rally. Kevin Kremer (Chico, Calif./Utah/Pleasant Valley HS) had five of his eight points during the surge which put Chaminade up 67-44 at the midway point of the second half.

Chaminade maintained a 20-point lead during most of the final 10 minutes of the second half and led by as many as 30.

In all, the Silverswords outscored the Hawks, 44-27, after Cartaino fouled out. They made a whopping 17 of their 25 field goal attempts (68 percent) in the final 16 minutes including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Awet had 15 during the span followed by Amaral-Artharee's 12.

There were four ties and six lead changes in the game's first 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Small's layup gave the 'Swords a 12-10 lead early in the first half, a lead which stood for the rest of the game. Chaminade's biggest lead in the first 20 minutes was 14 although Holy Names' 9-2 run to close out the first half narrowed it to 39-32 at halftime.

Nine of the 'Swords' 10 players who saw court time got into the scoring column.

Chaminade shot a season-high 53.6 percent (37-of-69) from the floor and was 7-of-17 from 3-point distance with Amaral-Artharee knocking down four of them.

The 'Swords also crashed hard on the boards with 50 rebounds, their most since New Year's Eve 2016 when they pulled down 56 against Northwest Indian College. Small had a career-high in boards with 13 while Kremer also logged a career best with 11. Awet was one board away from his first career double-double but his rebound total surpassed his career high set during his freshman season at SIU Edwardsville.

Small was also three assists shy of a triple-double with Awet and Andre Arissol (Northampton, England/Otero JC/Charnwood HS) each dropping three dimes.

Chaminade held HNU to just 34.8 percent shooting from the floor and just 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hawks were held to 32 rebounds, had 18 turnovers and was just 9-of-20 from the free throw line.

The Silverswords continue their road trip Thursday at Notre Dame de Namur.
