Men’s Hoops Victorious in Road Finale

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team completed their four-game trip to the Bay Area Saturday with a wire-to-wire 90-59 victory over Dominican University of California at the Conlon Center.
 
Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) had his first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Silverswords who won the final three games of the trip. He made 9-of-16 shots and added three assists and three steals.
 
Kendall Small (Lakewood, Calif./Pacific/Mayfair HS), coming off a triple-double on Thursday, scored a career-high 17 points, making eight of his 11 shots from the field, along with five rebounds and three assists.
 
Meanwhile Roman Young (Wichita, Kan./Mineral Area College/Sunrise Christian Academy) scored a career-high 13 points, making three 3-pointers for Chaminade which improved to 6-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Pacific West Conference.
 
Eliet Donley (Yokosuka, Japan/Hayfield, Va., HS) and Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) also reached double figures with 10 points each.
 
The Penguins (1-10, 1-4 PacWest) were led by Sam Averbuck's 15 points.
 
Chaminade made 50.7 percent of its shots (34-of-67) and hit nine 3-pointers and held Dominican to 37.9 percent from the floor. They also out-rebounded the Penguins, 46-32.
 
Andre Arissol (Northampton, England/Otero JC/Charnwood HS) had a team-high four assists while Kevin Kremer (Chico, Calif./Utah/Pleasant Valley HS) completed an outstanding three-game stretch with eight rebounds with five points. Bill Awet (Sydney, Australia/SIU Edwardsville/Victory Rock Prep, Fla., HS) helped with nine points and five boards.
 
Cartaino and Small accounted for 18 of Chaminade's first 20 points of the game, grabbing a double-digit lead (20-9) at the midway mark of the first half. Dominican managed to cut its deficit to 25-16 at the 5:39 mark but Awet scored five points and Cartaino four as a part of Chaminade's half-ending 11-3 run while holding the Penguins without a field goal in the final four minutes to own a 36-19 halftime edge.
 
After DUC closed to within 49-36 with six minutes gone in the second half, Cartaino went on a personal 7-0 run to put the 'Swords up by 20. They slammed the door shut moments when Young nailed two consecutive 3s followed by another from Kremer.
 
Chaminade made 18-of-30 shots (60 percent) in the second half including seven triples. They also went to the foul line 22 times, making 13.
 
The 'Swords' defense also forced 13 Dominican giveaways, turning them into 14 points.
 
The Silverswords are next in action on Saturday, Jan. 4, when they host Biola at McCabe Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
