Softball Drops TOC Finale to Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Chaminade University softball team wrapped up the 2019 Tournament of Champions as well as their 17-game road trip Sunday with a 2-0 loss to host Stanislaus State at Warrior Softball Field.

Madelyn Stockslager (Torrance, Calif./South) was brilliant in the circle, taking a shutout into the sixth inning.

Engaged in a pitching duel with Stan State's Megan Stacy and Kylie Ragsdale, Stockslager certainly pitched well enough to pick up a win.

Neither squad had a hit until the top of the third when Kayla Henmi (Torrance, Calif./South) punched a two-out single to center with Kayla Russell (Honolulu/Kaiser) moving to second. But it proved to be a quick hook for Stacy who was lifted for Ragsdale who in turn retired the side.

Stockslager didn't allow her first hit until with two outs in the third on Alexus Martinez's single to right.

The Warriors mounted a threat after back-to-back lead-off walks to begin the bottom of the fifth. But Stockslager struck out Sydnee Machado then Alexis Velazquez (Fontana, Calif./Howard College/Alta Loma HS) made the defensive play of the game, making a diving stop near the first base bag to take away extra bases from pinch-hitter Lia Tom. Velazquez tagged the bag for the second out and prevented at least one run for scoring. Stockslager then got Martinez to fly out to left to end the inning.

The Silverswords got two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth but then things began to unravel. Aliyah Garvin hit a towering triple to right field then Deja Guzman's liner was just fair down the right field line to score the first run. Ragsdale then helped herself by looping a single that dropped just in front of Michelle Sasaki (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalaheo) for a big insurance run.

The 'Swords attempted a comeback of their own in the seventh. Down to their final out, pinch-hitter Marlisa Berrelleza (Indio, Calif./Indio) got a Texas Leaguer to fall in left. Hailey Matsumura (Honolulu/Saint Francis) hit a slow roller to shortstop and beat out the throw at first to put the tying runs on board. However Chaminade was not able to keep the train going with a game-ending groundout.

Stockslager allowed just four hits and three walks while punching out three. She also suffered another hard-luck loss to drop her record to 8-13.

Stacy and Ragdale combined on a three-hitter with the latter earning the win after tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. Ragsdale improved to 5-6 on the year.

Chaminade fell to 10-28 on their year, dropping all 17 games of its road trip that began March 19 at Azusa Pacific.

Stanislaus State improved to 17-22.

The Silverswords return home and resume Pacific West Conference action Saturday to start a four-game series against Academy of Art at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park. First pitch is scheduled at 12 p.m. with live streaming audio at GoSwords.com.
