HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team was back in action Friday, taking on in-state rival Hawai'i Hilo at the Ala Moana Tennis Courts.
Although the Silverswords came away on the short end, 7-0, it was their most competitive match in the three meetings against the Vulcans this season.
The 'Swords' doubles squads of No. 1
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) and No. 2
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) and
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China) each put up battles before falling.
There was much more drama in singles action, none more than at the No. 1 spot. Liner took an early lead in her match against Marina Colvee, winning the first set, 7-6, via a 7-4 tiebreak. But Colvee rallied winning the second set then outlasting Liner, 10-3, in the third.
At No. 2 singles, Te'i nearly rallied from a set down before dropping a close second set, 7-6, against Sandra Dafincescu.
The loss dropped Chaminade to 3-9 on the season while UH Hilo snapped a five-match skid to improve to 4-9.
The Silverswords and Vulcans will meet for a fourth and final time this season on Sunday at Ala Moana starting at 2:30 p.m.
