HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team concluded the season Monday with a 7-0 loss to intercity rival Hawai'i Pacific University at the Ala Moana Tennis Courts.
Despite the one-sided scores, the Silverswords were competitive with several long rallies against the Sharks who are ranked No. 10 nationally and No. 1 in the West Region.
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) took two games in their No. 1 doubles match while
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) and
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China) took one in the No. 2 spot.
Tomomi Kohno (Tokyo, Japan) and
Angelica Almilla (Laguna, Phillipines) rounded out the 'Swords' doubles teams.
In singles action, Kohno managed to take a pair of games in the first set in the No. 5 slot.
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt) held her own in No. 6 singles and despite not taking any games, made her opponent, Jayme Waites, earn every point with long rallies.
Following the match, Tatemichi was honored as the team's lone senior in attendance. It was her only year as a member of the tennis team and departs with three wins in doubles after concluding a record-breaking career with the soccer team. Another senior,
Nicole Nishiki (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) who came from the soccer team with Tatemichi, was honored in absentia.
Chaminade ends the season at 3-11. HPU improved to 10-5 in its final match before heading into next week's Pacific West Conference Championships in Arizona as the likely No. 1 seed.
