HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's basketball team continued an impressive 12-day stretch Thursday by surging past visiting Holy Names, 110-80, at McCabe Gymnasium.
Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) had a near-perfect shooting night by hitting 11-of-12 shots from the floor and making all 11 free throw tries. In all, the redshirt senior wing tied his career high with 36 points while also pulling down eight rebounds.
In the process, Cartaino became just the 17th Silversword in team history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, giving him 1,009 in his career, good for 16th all-time.
Kendall Small (Lakewood, Calif./Pacific/Mayfair HS) and
Eliet Donley (Yokosuka, Japan/Hayfield, Va.) each added 18 points while
Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), the two-time defending Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Week, chipped in with 13.
Roman Young (Wichita, Kan./Mineral Area College/Sunrise Christian Academy) added 11 points, drilling three 3-pointers, and registered a career-high six steals.s
The win improved the 'Swords to 11-6 overall and 9-3 in the PacWest with their average margin of victory in their last four games an impressive 25.8 points.
Justice De Corsi led the Hawks (5-11, 3-7 PacWest) with 25 points on the night.
Donley and
Kevin Kremer (Chico, Calif./Utah/Pleasant Valley HS) each pulled down six boards with the latter dishing out four assists.
From the onset, Holy Names resembled the squad that gave Chaminade fits in last year's PacWest Tournament quarterfinals, jumping out to a 17-9 lead five minutes into the contest. However Amaral-Artharee's 3-pointer triggered a 24-6 surge over the next eight minutes to put the 'Swords up 33-23. Cartaino and Donley combined for 17 points during the run.
Chaminade later outscored Holy Names, 12-2, to end the half, giving the home team a 51-34 lead at intermission.
The Hawks kept the deficit in the mid-teens for first part of the second half. However, another 'Swords' tsunami, this time at 17-0 during a three-minute span, helped clinched their fourth consecutive win.
Chaminade made 53.8 percent of its field goals and was 20-of-22 from the foul line while Holy Names shot a 50.8 percentile. They were also 14-of-22 from the charity stripe. The 'Swords controlled the glass, 38-30, and outscored the Hawks, 36-7, off turnovers, 64-46, in the paint and 40-18 on fast breaks.
Bill Awet (Sydney, Australia/SIU Edwardsville/Victory Rock Prep, Fla., HS) had two of the 'Swords' three blocked shots, both in highlight reel fashion.
The Silverswords return to action Saturday when they face Concordia in a highly-anticipated showdown between two of the PacWest's top squads. The Eagles (13-6, 7-3), who lost at Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday, were replaced by the 'Swords for third place in the conference standings. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
